ASPARTAME - Wednesday January 5th 2011

Mercola is also hot on aspartame, the artificial sweetener. Here's what he has to say.

'There are over 92 different health side effects associated with aspartame consumption including brain tumors, birth defects, diabetes, emotional disorders and epilepsy/seizures. Further, when aspartame is stored for long periods of time or kept in warm areas it changes to methanol, an alcohol that converts to formaldehyde and formic acid, which are known carcinogens.'

From my own experience it causes itchiness.

If you want to know more, just go to www.mercola.com and search for 'aspartame'. There's stacks of stuff there that obviously hasn't been read by the Minister for Health or the Head of the NH&MRC.

I reckon one of the first challenges for the new Preventive Health Agency is to ban fructose and aspartame from cool drinks.

Actually, to be fair, I understand that Australian soft drinks don't contain a high proportion of HFCS - but I'll check it out. But I certainly know that Coke contains 11% sugar and Fanta 13%. A litre of that a day is going to end up in one place!

The next task is to reduce the sugar content of cool drinks to below 5%.

And that's just for starters.

One the track
Went back up to the grass track at Stromlo this morning. We haven't been there for well over 6 months and it's looking good. Ran for 2 and a half kilometres and then walked another 1.5 for good measure. Calves feeling good.

In the evening Christine and I went to the gym.

In the meantime stay tuned, highly tuned and lay off cool drink.

Regards

John Miller
